Just like a regular deck, there are 4 suits in Tarot decks. Commonly, they are called “pentacles”, “wands”, “cups”, and “swords”. The diamonds, hearts, clubs, and spades are the same as the suits in Tarot decks, in the order given here. But that is far from the only meanings, as we are about to see. Suits in Tarot also correspond to the four directions, and various emotional and physical states of being, among other things.

Pentacles, or diamonds, stand for the earthly element, physical things. Health and home fall under this suit in Tarot. The compass direction of East is shown by this suit. In Tarot, pentacles stand for the season of Fall. It is feminine in nature, and influences the zodiac signs of Capricorn, Virgo, and Taurus. When we interpret a reading, any of these synonyms may be intended by the cards.

Wands indicate creativity and passion. It’s elemental force is that of fire, and it alludes to the power of spiritual forces. South is shown by wands, and it’s seasonal attribute is Spring, a time of spiritual growth and energetic action. The male gender is usually displayed. In astrology, the signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius for this suit in Tarot. In a regular deck of cards, these are the clubs.

Cups, or hearts stand for love and empathy, and the heart is their realm of influence. Of the suits in Tarot, this one indicates summer, and is ruled by the force of water. It’s sex is female and it can be emotional in nature. West is the cardinal direction, and the sun signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are represented. Cups can indicate directness in feeling, or bold decisions to made in a spread.

Swords show observation and thought in a reading. This is reflected in its element of air, and the isolation of winter. Swords exist in the realm of Mind, and can sometimes be abstract. This suit points to the North and it often demonstrates a challenge that must be taken into consideration. It is male in nature, and in astrology contains the signs of Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

By: Katherine Heiden

About the Author:

Many people will say many different things about tarot cards and tarot card descriptions; truth is there are many ways to understand them, but only one true way to actually define them. Tarot cards are a stack of cards placed in front of you, defining some of your most sought after questions in life.

Symbolism means everything in these cards, the mystical images for the divination and infamous fortune telling. They are most commonly known for their aspects of being a valuable thing for help with your life’s problems. People generally turn to these tarot card descriptions as a means of understanding their problems, concerns or questions in life and relationships. Tarot card descriptions may mean something different to each individual; however the cards themselves only have one meaning per card, symbol or suit.

Tarot cards were first known for being the card game used for entertainment among the upper class in ancient times. In the most popular tarot card descriptions, there is the game of “trumps”. This one in particular is a short word for triumph. There are 21 particular cards that could be ultimately played, no matter what hand was followed. These cards actually stood out from the normal or ordinary cards in hand. The idea that these cards were “special” gave the impression that they had special powers. Tarot card description can be difficult to understand, but with the right teaching or guidance can make complete sense.

In tarot card descriptions there are four suits; Swords, Wands, Pentacles and Cups. These were often compared with the natural elements from their world by Europeans, and thought to hold mystical powers of sorts. They soon brought in the images to these cards giving them even more meaning to their occult beliefs. The tarot card descriptions will portray an aspect in your life depending on the suit presented to you.

Druids, pagan priests, and witches were often the ones dealing these cards for people, creating an element of power among the people and villages. It is still widely accepted and known today that these cards hold a mystical power and that the tarot card descriptions were each just as powerful.

Each card has a different suit, a different meaning or tarot card description, none of which will ever be exactly the same. The reader understands these cards and what each picture or symbol means. The person will have a symbol that represents an aspect of their life, sort of like a puzzle. The reader will put together the “puzzle” in a sense that ultimately will make sense to the person having the reading done.

As each card is turned over by the person, the reader will be able to explain the meaning or description of that tarot card and its relation to each prior card that has been turned over. Often the person will soon figure out what each card was trying to represent in their life and revealing a solution to their problem or unanswered questions. Tarot card descriptions can ultimately help a person throughout their lives if done correctly.

By: Karmen Bella

About the Author:

When first learning about the tarot, one of the first things to do is learning tarot spreads. Learning tarot spreads is essential to the art of reading the cards, because many spreads assign specific meanings to the order in which the cards are read.

In learning tarot spreads, the most important thing to remember is that it is important to learn as many different options as possible. Since there are thousands of different situations you’ll be reading for, you should have options available for every possible circumstance. Sometimes you’ll want to create your own reading, which is perfectly acceptable as long as the rules are followed.

Once you begin to learning tarot spreads, from the very simple to the very advanced, you will need to find a good filing system so that you can remember all of the different combinations. Many readers keep a journal of all of the readings which they have done. This will not only help remind you of the different meanings of the positions in the spread, but it will also give you an opportunity to check your progress and track your development. Since many people believe that using this divination tool can unlock psychic powers, this may provide an opportunity to test this theory.

Learning tarot spreads is best done with the help of a book on the subject, one which not only covers the basic options, but also gives an in-depth look at how to use a spread, and the meanings of the individual cards.

By: Katherine Heiden

About the Author:

There are hundreds, if not thousands of different spreads in tarot which are available for use in reading. These alternative layouts provide some in-depth analysis which may not be available through the use of a regular three or seven card layout. Learning a number of different spreads in tarot can help you focus your divination efforts on a single problem or area of interest, which is what many clients want from your reading.

Whenever you approach one of the different spreads in tarot, it is always helpful to relate this new layout to one which you already know. All good tarot books include information about at least four or five different layouts which they proclaim to be “the basics” which you need to know. Almost every one of the layouts you’ll learn should be somehow related to one or more of these. If not, consider getting a different book which includes a little more detailed insight into the layouts and cards.

The basic spreads in tarot are widely disputed, but they usually include at least four basic layouts: the three card, or past-present-future spread, the seven-card spread, the cross, and the half-deck, or astrology spread. These basic readings usually cover wide swaths of life, while many of the different spreads in tarot will involve taking those same attributes of life and applying them only to one specific area.

While many people concentrate their efforts on learning only two or three different spreads in tarot, there are a whole world of options available to you, and it is important to explore your options before making a decision on which particular spread to use. Most of the spreads are related, so by finding a book or guide which covers the basic meanings of a number of different spreads in tarot, it is possible to use this to help you learn a new layout.

By: Katherine Heiden

About the Author:

In understanding the meaning of tarot cards, it is important to recognize that the cards, particularly the Major Arcana, have different meanings depending on where the card appears, other cards in the reading, and even whether the card is upright, or upside down. Understanding the meaning of tarot cards is essential to getting an accurate reading. In most cases, a failed reading is due to misinterpreting the spread, and it is the responsibility of anyone attempting such a divination to know the art well. Understanding the meaning of tarot cards may seem daunting, but with a little practice, anyone can read a layout in only a short time.

One of the most important facets of understanding the meaning of tarot cards is to be conversant with how each trump relates to its position in the spread. The Fool, presented in the Past position of The Celtic Cross, is far different than if the same trump holds the position of Conflict. This holds true for every card of every suit. Indeed, understanding the meaning of tarot cards as they relate to each realm of the spread is crucial, and any responsible reader will take care to ensure complete accuracy.

What is the best method for understanding the meaning of tarot cards? Study is always the best answer, to this question. One must be familiar with the whole deck, with the spread they have chosen to use, and with interpreting the various realms of the reading itself. Cutting corners will almost always result in an unsuccessful divination, so take the time for understanding the meaning of tarot cards. Be familiar with the suits, and the various things which each suit represents. Be comfortable, when looking through the Major Arcana, with the underlying implications and nuances that are inherent in each one. Likewise, the Minor Arcana’s suits define subtle indications that one must carefully evaluate.

The Tarot is magical and mystical. Understanding the meaning of tarot cards is paramount if one desires to unleash these powers for themselves, or others. Look for opportunities to perform a reading for friends and family. Practicing often is a sure way to hone the skills of divination, and attune oneself to the spiritual energies involved. There really isn’t a substitute for study or practice. Whether its for understanding the meaning of the Tarot, or any other endeavor, practice is the key to perfection.

By: Katherine Heiden

About the Author:

A question I get asked a lot is “What are the best Tarot card decks?” Well, “best” is a relative term. I don’t really think there is any such thing as “best” but I do agree that there are some decks that are more popular than others and maybe a little easier to understand. In this article, I’m going to briefly review the most popular and probably the most easy to learn Tarot card decks in the world today. Hopefully, after reading this, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what Tarot card deck you will ultimately end up with.

Without a doubt, the most popular and easiest to learn Tarot card deck is the Rider Waite Tarot Deck. This deck was named after the very famous occult scholar, Dr. Arthur Edward Waite. The deck was first created in 1910. He had the designs drawn by a very talented lady by the name of Pamela Coleman Smith. Pamela was a member of the occult society group called the Order of the Golden Dawn.

The deck itself is very pleasing to look at. The symbolism is very easy to understand. But the best thing about using this deck is that there are so many books written on the use of these particular cards that learning to use the Rider Waite deck is going to be easier than just about any other deck in existence. For this reason, most occultists recommend that beginners start off with the Rider Waite Deck.

Another very popular Tarot Card deck, though nowhere near as easy to learn, is the Llewellyn Tarot. The illustrations in this deck are based off of the legends and the mythology of Wales. The artwork is created ina a very beautiful watercolor style.

The Llewellyn deck isn’t as easy to read as the Rider Waite and there aren’t as many books on it either. However, you can find some decent ones in your more established occult stores, whereas you can find a Rider Wait book in just about any book store.

Of course, probably one of the most popular Tarot Card decks of all time is the Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot, which was created by another Order of the Golden Dawn member, Aleister Crowley. Reading this deck is extremely difficult and requires some pretty serious prior knowledge of Tarot Cards. One of the most unusual things about this deck is that it contains three versions of the Magus card. If you’re going to use this deck for your divination, some serious study of the Tarot beforehand will be required.

There are of course many other Tarot Card decks, but these three should be more than enough to get you started. I suggest starting with the Rider Waite, then moving on to the Llewellyn Tarot, and then finally tackling the Aleister Crowley Thoth Tarot, when you begin to feel more adventurous.

To YOUR Divination Success.

Steven Wagenheim

By: Steven Wagenheim

About the Author:

There are a number of ways a tarot reader can ask a question of the tarot cards. The simplest situation arises if the question is a yes/no question. Then, the tarot reader can do a simple one or three-card throw. The simplest way to ask the tarot cards a yes/no question would be to throw one tarot card, and if it lands upright, the answer is yes, if it lands reversed, the answer is no. However, a little more effort should be expended to ensure a more accurate and helpful answer. There is a bit more to doing even a simple tarot card reading, as we will see below.

First of all, the one-card method works differently if you use rectangular cards that can only land upright or reversed. On the plus side, this tarot reading will provide you with a simple yes or no answer. However, as most situations are not 100% likely to occur, this style restrains how accurate the tarot cards can be and also how much information the tarot cards can provide for the reader. Because I use circular cards, a one-card toss gives me 360 degrees of freedom from yes to uncertain to no.

The second issue that arises when one does a tarot reading with one card, is that usually you need to see more than one card to understand anything about what is going on. Remember, a tarot reading is always about energy, and energy is always in motion: there is more movement in two cards, which can interact, than one card. That is why usually I place at least three cards if I wish to ask the tarot cards a yes/no question. If all three cards are upright, or mostly upright, and all cards are positive, the answer is yes. If two cards land upright, your answer is that it is probable, and the tarot reader should also look at which tarot cards landed in which direction (and the querrent should be wary to stay in the positive to ensure the desired result). If no tarot cards land upright, the answer is not likely, or no. The answer also is no or not likely if all cards land reversed, or all cards are negative-energy cards.

Generally, a tarot card reader will find that she rarely places three upright, positive-energy cards. This makes sense because few situations are absolutely certain to occur. Usually when one seeks guidance from the tarot cards, the situation is either uncertain or complex; and, will require an inquiry into which cards land in response to the question, as well as whether or not the cards land upright or reversed. Remember, a tarot card reader will receive the most accurate and helpful information from the tarot when the question asked of the tarot is very clear and focused.

Now you have a simple, one or three-card layout you can use to receive guidance from the tarot cards with a yes/no question. If the question cannot be answered by a yes or a no, the most popular tarot card layout probably would be the cross, also known as the Celtic Cross. The cross layout will be discussed in my next article. Check back soon for another lesson into reading tarot cards.

By: Alexandra Luna

About the Author:

The tarot is an ancient method of divination, which means divining the future with predictions. The tarot cards and their meanings have intrigued and fascinated many people over the centuries.

The tarot consists of 78 cards divided into two sections, the Major and Minor Arcana. The word Arcana means secret. The cards, therefore, are a collection of the secrets that can be revealed in a tarot reading. The cards convey many messages because of the richness of their images and connections.

A tarot reader will interpret the cards based on their meaning in relation to their position in the spread and the psychic connection with the subject. The reader will then verbalise these messages to pass onto others in tarot readings.

When laying out a spread, some cards may be revealed upside down to the reader. This can happen as if by accident, during the process of shuffling for example. Some readers purposefully mix the cards in such a way so as to cause some unknown cards to be reversed.

When learning the tarot, most people begin by learning the traditional upright meaning for each card. Most are unaware that a reversed card has a different meaning.

Whether to incorporate reversed tarot meanings is a matter for the reader. Many choose not to offer reversed tarot meanings and if a card is reversed will give the traditional upright meaning. Deciding to incorporate the meanings of reversed tarot cards is entirely down to the tarot reader.

Many of the most experienced and competent readers do not use reversed cards at all in their tarot readings. Some believe that there is no need to use reversals since the entire spectrum of emotion and action is already covered in the 78 cards. Others maintain that a reversed card signals that the energy of the upright card is blocked or may be delayed in some way. Others still, believe that a reversed card has the same meaning as an upright card but special attention should be paid to it.

Whether or not to use reversals is a decision you must make for yourself. But if you are just starting to learn the tarot, it is better to stick with the traditional upright meaning until you have a good understanding of the cards.

Once you are confident with the meaning of the cards, you may wish to introduce reversed cards to your tarot spreads. There are numerous ways you can introduce reversed cards to your tarot deck. Firstly, you can shuffle, then split the deck in two and turn one half upside-down. Continue doing this until you are satisfied the cards are well reversed. When doing readings, you can also use this method to ensure that different cards get reversed for different readings. You can also ask the person receiving the reading to cut the pack and decide which half gets turned upside-down. Or you can simply allow your cards to naturally reverse themselves, by mixing them face down on the table.

Whatever you decide, using reversed meanings provides an intriguing aspect to tarot meanings, and readings you provide and conduct.

By: Alison Yates

About the Author:

Printable tarot decks are becoming more and more commonly available on the internet today. These decks include images of all of the cards in a tarot deck, and allow you to get your hands on these cards for free. While printable tarot decks are nice for people on a budget, it is important to think twice before using a printable tarot card decks.

One thing which you will find out about printable tarot decks is that they are usually very inconsistent with size and shape. As a result, they can become muddled up and destroyed quite easily. Depending on the kind of printable tarot deck being used, it can be rather difficult to replace single cards.

Also look at the detail and the quality of the printable tarot deck being used. If there is too much detail in the card, they can, and will, fade, and be difficult to see over time. You will not be able to understand the symbolism as well, and you will not have as thorough an understanding of the deck. Good printable tarot card decks will have little coloring and be crisply printed, and equally sized. Unfortunately, few collections meet those criteria. Consider again that singular cards will be very difficult to replace.

Before deciding whether or not to use printable tarot card decks, one should also try to shuffle a stack of paper. Since these cards will almost certainly be printed on regular copy paper, you should be aware of how difficult it is to shuffle limp papers together. If you plan on backing your deck with card stock, which is expensive and time consuming, then you might as well just spend the $10 on a real deck.

However, there are decent printable tarot decks available online. Make sure you check them out, and make sure to get a decent book so that you can learn how to do professional readings. It is important not to skimp on this, or to pick up a lousy book with incorrect meanings, or incoherent definitions. This is definitely important, because a single incorrectly defined card could spoil an entire reading.

By: Katherine Heiden

About the Author:
